Trottevieille 2005 • June 2006
TROTTEVIEILLE
1st Great Classified Growth
2005 vintage

Growing season :
With higher than average temperatures and a deficit in rainfall of 305 mm compared to the average of the last thirty years, this year was like no other we had known. July and August passed with scarcely a drop of rain but with strong winds, relatively high temperatures and particularly cool nights. After a spell of light showers at the beginning of September, the fine weather returned.

Harvest :
We began the Merlot picking on the 26th September and the Cabernets on the 4th October. For all the grape varieties the quality of the bunches brought in was superb. Crop control work during the summer had paid off handsomely.
The bunches were picked and placed in small crates and tipped on to a first sorting table before being de-stemmed. The berries were then sent on to a second sorting table before being crushed and put into the fermentation vat. As soon as they arrived in the vat, the temperature was lowered so as to extract as much fruit aroma as possible. Long fermentations at carefully controlled temperatures produced very well balanced wines with superb colour. Shorter than usual pump-overs were carried out over a vatting period that lasted four weeks on average.
The malo-lactic fermentations were done half in barrels and half in vat, whilst all the oak in contact with the wine was new.

Again, this year we vinified separately grapes from Trottevieille’s old, ungrafted vines. Some of the resulting wine will be bottled for posterity, but most of it will later be blended as usual into the top wine.

Tasting :
A deep purple colour. Great complexity on the nose with ripe blackcurrant notes mingling with oak and roasted coffee beans. On the palate it is round, fresh, complete and harmonious in the attack, followed by great power and a lingering finish.

Blend :
- 53% Merlot
- 44% Cabernet Franc
- 3% Cabernet Sauvignon

Yield :
24 hectolitres per hectare
