Surface area : 23.4 hectares (57.7 acres) in one single block.
Soils : Clay-limestone in the high part, clay-sand-limestone on the hillside slopes.
Exposure : South-facing
Grape varieties : - 50% Merlot - 47% Cabernet Franc - 3% Cabernet Sauvignon
Average age of the vines : 30 years
Vineyard management : Vines grown in the traditional manner. Some of the rows are seeded with grass. De-budding and crop thinning. Manual harvesting.
2005 vintage : An unprecedented year with an extremely large water deficit but also with temperatures which allowed a successful ripening of polyphenols. The growing season passed without any particular problems which enabled spray treatments to be kept down to a minimum. The picking began on September 16 with the Merlot and finished on October 1 with the last of the Cabernet Franc, all of which was harvested in exceptionally fine weather. The quality of the grapes was incredibly high both in terms of health and balance, with small-sized berries brought about by the drought, though these were in no way passerillé (concentrated by the sun and the wind). Potential alcoholic degrees were very high, but the freshness remained remarkably intact. The yield was 30 hectolitres per hectare and the blending will be around 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. The characteristics of this vintage are unquestionably harmony and balance.
Second wine : Le Carillon de l’Angélus
